about us
The Railway Inn is situated in Hightown next to Congleton Train Station and bridge 75 on the Macclesfield canal.
The building is a grade II listed building that was originally an inn with stables, known back then as ‘The Navigation’.
In the 1840s, shortly after the industrial revolution, the railway line came to Congleton. At that time, the Inn was linked by level crossing to it’s near neighbour, The Queen’s Head to the west.
Both pubs were run by the same licensee who changed the name from “The Navigation” to “The Railway” following the opening of the Stoke-Macclesfield Railway.
The pub was once owned by Joules of Stone, became a Bass Tavern in the 1960s and was taken over by Punch in 2000.
In 2018, we reopened the pub and it changed brewery from Punch to Star Pubs & Bars.
Since then the pub has been tastefully updated and undergone refurbishment – we intend to continue the improvements as we go so watch this space!
The new management have a food background, we are qualified chefs with a passion for cooking upmarket, yet traditional food.
The pub has a friendly, laid back atmosphere with a modern interior but decorated respecting the local heritage, with a railway theme that shows its railway connections throughout.
